Cycle repair

If you are like me, I get motivated to use my bike, and when I get it out find that I'd put it away with a puncture - which I don't feel I can mend myself. Recently, there have been some wonderful developments to help us to overcome barriers we have to getting out on our bikes. They are varied and exciting ... more cycling lanes for a safe ride, electric bikes and electric cargo bikes, cycle repair workshops, as well as our high street cycle shops.

Cycle shops and repair workshops

Some cycle shops are becoming 'hubs', where not only do you buy new bikes, but you might be able to buy refurbished bikes and e-bikes, have your bike mended, buy no-puncture tyres, anabwl-friendly bikes, learn to maintain your bike ... and how to repair it.

Why not take a cycle repair course?

Your local cycle repair workshop may run courses. Knowing how to fix your bike can save you money and give you more confidence.

ACTION: Get the bike in your shed out and see what needs doing. If it's mended and ready to ride you might fancy taking it out!

If you are serious about wanting to improve your cycle repair skills - or to become a professional cycle repairer, visit the Cycle Wales page for information on accredited courses.

If you just want to ask a question about your bike, there is an online forum here - roadcc-bike-forum

Recycle your cycle

Take in your old bike or bike parts for recycling into ... bikes!

Newtown's Bike to the Future will take your broken bikes and parts and use them to repair other bikes or put new ones together.

ACTION: Do you have old or unused bikes or bike parts? Take them to your local cycle repair workshop to get them going or donate.

What is a 'Bike Library'?

Bike to the Futrure in Newtown is a charity offering a new service - a Bike Library. Children grow, but their bikes don't grow with them - and many are discarded each year. Now, when your child outgrows their bike, you can take it into Bike to the Future and swap it for a fully refurbished, bigger one - for free!

For as long as you like, you can borrow any of their 24″ wheel bikes or smaller when you donate any bicycle. This reduces carbon emissions from making new bikes and saves you money. Win-win!
